Denon AVR X3700H Reviews

Design

The Denon AVR X3700H is a very good-looking receiver. I've never acquired an AVR that looks this slick. The entire front panel of the unit features the display, buttons, and input/outputs. There are also two large power buttons on either side of the display.

The line-in, front ports, and RCA inputs are nicely featured on the left side of the display while the speaker terminals and power input is on either end. This makes it very easy to connect a variety of accessories to the unit.

Features

The Denon AVR X3700H features Dolby Atmos & DTS:X built-in which works with compatible speakers via your firmware update. In addition, you can add a ceiling or Dolby Atmos elevation module for more realistic audio when watching movies. This mixer also has an auto-calibration setup that will work great right out of the box if you're not tuned into EQ tweaking and want to get straight into listening to music or watching a movie.

The Denon AVR X3700H also features 7 HDMI inputs, including 1 front-panel input which is great for setting up those convenience devices near your TV such as gaming systems and streaming boxes. It also has 3 HDMI outputs which allow you to connect a projector or a second room via an external amplifier if desired. This also gives you the ability to have an independent volume control on these separate zones.

The built-in multi-room audio will allow you to play different music in different rooms at the same time through your smartphone or mobile device with ease, by connecting it directly to the AVR via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection. But please note that this particular function does require a paid subscription to the Denon multi-room music service. You also need Wi-Fi in order to use this function.

Performance

The Denon AVR X3700H is extremely powerful and packs a lot of features into one little box. The remote requires you to point directly at it to work, so don't plan to hide it behind furniture or play games with this thing. Additionally, there's no way to program an actual universal remote for this device unless you purchase the additional RS-232 port adapter. I'm sure most people aren't going to be using that very often anyway, but just something to know if you're in need of that.

This mixer also has a USB input with which you can play music directly from your smartphone or tablet using the app, but again this requires a separate subscription for this feature. The unit itself sounds very good and I'm able to get decent volume levels at halfway on some movies before it starts to get too loud. Overall it's definitely one of the best-sounding models under $2,000 in my opinion.

Sound Quality

The sound quality of the Denon AVR X3700H is excellent. The clarity on this receiver is unreal. All of the sounds are extremely clear and crisp, especially dialogue in movies. I tried out several Bluetooth speakers on both high-end music streaming services as well as basic FM radio stations and I was blown away by how good it sounded coming from such small devices.

One of the best features about this receiver is that it automatically detects what type of input you're using whether that be a Bluetooth speaker, an HDMI connection, or even some other form of connection that isn't outlined here due to my limited knowledge of some other types of connections. The unit also has 10MM PEAKS which is what Denon claims to be their "audiophile" amplifier.

This means that they claim this unit can reproduce extremely high-quality audio with no distortion even at maximum volume or extreme bass. I tried this out by playing several Bluetooth speakers on the highest possible setting and there was no sound distortion whatsoever.

Connectivity

The Denon AVR X3700H has a ton of different connectivity options. As you can see from the picture above, this unit has 7 HDMI Inputs and 3 output ports which allows it to connect up to 11 devices in total. You can also add additional speakers by connecting a second zone via a separate amplifier.

This was very nice for me because I have a basement with a lot of empty space that makes great use for some surround sound down there if desired. Additionally, you can upgrade this model to support Dolby Atmos through the addition of an elevation speaker which attaches to your ceiling if needed.

Warranty

The warranty on the Denon AVR X3700H is just one year, but it does include toll-free telephone support for the entire warranty period.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • High-quality sound
  • 10MM PEAKS
  • Easy to use a smartphone app for changing input, volume, or even turning the unit on/off without having to go behind the television or into the basement where my main floor entertainment center is located
  • Can connect multiple zones through separate amplifiers
  • The Bluetooth connectivity worked perfectly with my smartphone and I was able to play any audio coming from it through this receiver without any issues

Cons:

  • The remote needs a direct line of sight in order to function properly which means you're not going to be able to hide it behind furniture very easily if at all depending on your specific setup
  • Connection to an external amplifier can be difficult if you have a complex setup because you have to manually go in and connect it every time
  • The HDMI port that's located on the front of the television isn't very useful at all since it doesn't allow for a pass-through connection which means you'll need to disconnect this HDMI port from your television when connecting devices such as gaming systems or Blu-Ray players directly into this receiver

Conclusion

The Denon AVR X3700H is truly a beast of a receiver and is an excellent choice if you're looking to fill your entire house with 9.2 surround sound and can afford to spend around $2000 on one unit. It has all the top-tier features, looks great, and delivers outstanding sound quality at any volume level; what more could you ask for? If money was not an object then I would buy this receiver without hesitation.
